Det.
Cpl. James M. Grimes was a decorated member of the Cumberland, Rhode Island
Police Dept. With over 6 years of service, Det. Grimes received many awards
and commendations throughout the years.
Graduating in 1981 from Cumberland High School, James, an avid swimmer,
worked as a lifeguard at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln, RI, before
taking courses at Nichols College in Dudley, MA. In 1987, he attended
the Maine State Police Academy and though he was offered a position on
the police force, James instead decided to return to his native, Cumberland,
where his heart and soul had always been.
James continued his career in law enforcement, working as a security officer
at the Ann & Hope store in Cumberland as well as Wheaton College in
Franklin, MA. In 1989, he completed the Massachusetts Campus Police Training
Course, furthering his duties at Wheaton. He continued to thrive as a
reserve police officer for Cumberland, and in 1990, he graduated from
the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy. James excelled in various training
and certificate programs while on the force and was promoted in 1994 to
the rank of Detective. That same year, he earned his BSI Certificate from
the University of Rhode Island.
Just a year later James found his true calling as he took part in the
Rhode Island State Police Undercover Operations Seminar. Throughout his
career, he excelled in his work, whether it was risking his life on the
streets in undercover missions, or earning good sportsmanship awards from
his peers. James was a true professional, dedicated to helping the citizens
of Cumberland. His contributions to the police force and community were
given the recognition he deserved as he was posthumously promoted to Detective
Corporal, shortly after his death in 1996.
